1962 à Calcuta. Deux maisons voisines : dans l'une, vit Lolita (Vidya Balan), orpheline sans argent depuis l'enfance, dans l'autre réside Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan), richissime. La romance de toute une vie entre Lolita et Shekar  est bouleversée par l'arrivée d'un autre homme.
